To coincide with International day of disabilities on 3 December, Komnas Perempuan, supported by the Australian Government aid program (AusAID), is highlighting violence against women with disabilities by pushing for strategies to protect them.

Experts from the disability sector will review Indonesia’s implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities and discuss ways the legal justice system can protect these women from violence.

Graeme Innes (pictured), who is the Disability Discrimination Commissioner from the Australian Human Rights Commission, provided the key note address at a conference to discuss these issues. The conference was funded through AusAID’s Australia Indonesia Partnership for Justice.

Indonesia’s president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, showed his support for a new disaster prevention tool launched by the AusAID-funded Australia-Indonesia Facility for Disaster Reduction.

Australian Attorney-General and Minister for Emergency Management, Nicola Roxon, was in Yogyakarta, Indonesia this week, along with Australia’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Greg Moriarty, to attend a ministerial conference on disaster risk reduction.

During his opening address, President Yudhoyono identified Australia and the facility as important partners in disaster risk reduction in Indonesia.

President Yudhoyono said he appreciated the relationship the facility had developed with Indonesia and said he could see the value tools such as InaSAFE have in helping to ensure communities can better prepare for disasters.
